Loved when Benedict said this. As much as I love his Sherlock, it’s not the Holmes written by Doyle. It is, like Jeremy once said, a derivative. Jeremy Brett is the definitive Holmes and no one has ever come close to capturing the Holmes from the novels to the degree that he did, nor has any other show/film done such a faithful adaptation of the novels.

He would refuse a script that would go against Doyle’s description of the character. Brett did it so brilliantly, from Holmes’ mannerisms to his habits to the distinctive flip of the cane. He became consumed and obsessed with this role because he considered Holmes to be so much like him, and the character eventually took over him. Sadly, this along with his physical and personal tragedies proved to be a fatal combination. I simply cannot watch him in the last few episodes, it pains me to see this man so ill and fragile, someone who could barely stand and talk and would need an oxygen mask every few seconds. This visibly affected his performance, “but darlings, the show must go on”, he said.

Lets all remember this superb and extremely dedicated professional who gave everything he had in his ambition to be the best Sherlock Holmes ever. And you did it, Sir. May you Rest in Peace.

“Well…unbelievably, we’ve never seen Doyle before. Now, don’t ask me why that is, I don’t understand. All these years, no one has done his stories. They’ve done derivatives. They’ve taken the names of Holmes and Watson, but they’ve never done his stories. I *cannot* think why. At least that gave me something to do.” - Jeremy Brett

Not gonna lie, I felt myself tear up a little and the largest grin spread across my face when he said that.

Even if John is married in the next series

sherlockianconnoisseur:

amuppetofagirl:

Let’s remember:

1. Mary dies. I actually hope she’s an amazing character so everyone bashing on her now feel like assholes.

2. Since when did a woman really get in the way of pairing?

Or man.

Or common sense.

Nothing gets in the way of pairings is my point.

So stop bitching about something which may or may not happen.

If it doesn’t, whatever. If it does? What the fuck ever.

I have to add my two cents here, and I know this wasn’t the OP’s intent so none of this is directed at them, but it really grates my last nerve when Mary’s death is used as justification for introducing her character into any adaptation. Really, every time I see posts along the lines of, “Hey shippers, cool your jets, she’s going to kick the bucket anyway,” it feels like we’re undermining her entire character, and Mary deserves better than that.

Bottom line, yes there is a possibility that Mary will be introduced in the next or a future series, but let’s not assume that because she’s Mary Morstan she will die. Remember Sherlock is a reinterpretation - nothing is set in stone. Moffat and Gatiss can work their magic anyway they see fit. Also let’s not forget Watson had a brother who died from alcoholism in the canon, but John’s sister Harry - though still a drinker - is by all accounts still alive and well.

There is something deeply unsettling about when fans hate on Mary and Irene (though yes, I hate when Irene is paired with Sherlock). There’s this implication that having a woman around who is not a Mommy-type like Mrs. Hudson ruins the franchise for them.

Combined with all the hate Sally gets and the reaction to Lucy (including the weak “Well, if SHERLOCK was a girl too we’d be okay with it…” Sure you would.) I’m really irritated with a lot of Sherlock fans.

Before today’s round of “Sherlock Fans React Stupidly to Elementary Press Releases,” I found what might the 277th “If I wrote Sherlock” tumblr post I’ve seen that consists entirely of gay jokes and meme quotes.

That’s when I realized what was wrong with Sherlock fans.

Their minds are made of meme.

Not all of them, and not even all of the time for most of them, but haven’t you noticed how the second biggest ship is a set of characters who never interact? How so many people who have actually watched the show think Sherlock is a delicate person persecuted by Sally rather than a bully who didn’t realize it was a bad idea to make so many enemies? How the best-known line of Lestrade’s is the most out of character thing he’s said in any adaptation? (I’m including the movie where he turned out to be lying because he was in league with Sherlock all along,) How all of the character tags are populated with pictures of the actors in different movies because no matter how good the movie/show is, what role the actor is playing (even ones that are the complete opposite of their character from moral alignment down to the body language like Graves in Wallander) or how fucking awesome they are at it, they still think of the Sherlock character?

The memes have taken over.

And so when it was announced that CBS would be doing an adaptation, the message went out that it was ripping off Moffat and American. And that message was passed from fan to fan and it became a meme. And now that actual announcements are happening, every similarity confirms that it is a rip-off and every change confirms that it is America sucking the life and culture out of the concept. And these two ideas co-exist together in many fans, often as part of the same thought. And they pass it from fan to fan between fluffy descriptions of sociopathy and anti-Sally rants and International “Not My Division” gifs (where the American ones don’t have guns, huh?) and little cartoons of Anderson holding a dinosaur. Because their minds are made of meme. Sherlock Fandom memes are like the Hexus Corporation. They are sentient, parasitic, and viral. They are dangerous. They are like a Grant Morrison-created supervillain come to life and they are on the Internet.

They are spreading from blog to blog… from tag to tag… character to character…

Shh…

I can hear them.

The memes are coming from inside the post.

HEXUS IS HERE!!!

Run for the backdoor! I’ll get a superhero!

Marvel Boy fought Hexus, let me find a recent appearance. I understand he’s “not a boy anymore” which should mean he’s grown and matured since…

I seriously thought that was a joke. But no. I visited the Elementary tag and there are seriously people flipping their shit because, ooooo…

  • Cumberbatch’s Sherlock wears a scarf! Miller’s Sherlock wears a scarf!
  • Cumberbatch’s Sherlock wears a black duster! Miller’s Sherlock wears a black peacoat (that’s significantly shorter)!
  • Freeman’s Watson wears a gray shirt! Liu’s Watson wears a gray shirt!
  • Freeman’s Watson wears flannel! Liu’s Watson shirt looks like it might also be made of a soft fabric!
  • Freeman’s Watson wears a (short) jacket! Liu’s Watson wears a jacket (a black longcoat)!

TOTAL RIPOFF!!!

You people are kidding right? This is intentional trolling in the tags? I mean, GOD. They’re dressed like it might actually get cold in NYC or some shit. Unfathomable, right?

Shut up.

True fact:

Benedict Cumberbatch was the first man in history to wear a scarf.

The first Sherlock Holmes, even!

This, this right here is why I look down on Sherlock fans who only watch Sherlock. I’m good with DC fans who like the cartoons and don’t know comics, and most TV series fans who don’t read the books but this one. THIS one. They do too much self-righteous wanking not to be doing their fucking research.

Moffat and Gatiss did not create Sherlock Holmes and all the accessories!

They were not the first to have them dress in gray shirts and scarves thatisofuckingridiculousIcouldfeedyoutowerewolves.

They weren’t even the first to modernize them, the Basil Rathbone films in the FORTIES did that.

And CBS is almost certainly not the first to have Sherlock Holmes take a trip to the US.

READ THE FUCKING BOOKS.

They’re on Wikisource for fuck’s sake.

So does anyone else after watching the Sherlock fans who haven’t read the book or apparently seen any other adaptations, want to see this CBS show get picked up and go on for years?

blacksentai:

I’ve wanted “Elementary” to be a roaring success from first announcement. Modern day Sherlock in NY!? What’s not to like? Plus, for the second it was announced BBC Sherlock fans were just all in a tizzy. “Why do we need this?” they ask. “Just to tweak you guys a bit” CBS answers.

Dear uneducated fans complaining about Gregson’s name in Elementary…

starshark:

No one has changed Lestrade’s name. GREGSON IS AN ACTUAL CHARACTER FROM CANON. Seriously, look it up. Read the stories. Inspector Tobias Gregson is not even just some one-time character from a minor story, he was in A Study in Scarlet, The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter, The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge and The Adventure of the Red Circle.

I am not exactly thrilled by this American version of Sherlock either, but if you’re going to be angry with it, be angry for actual reasons. Like Sherlock says, “Do your research.” Don’t be an Anderson!
