Via Sherlockian ConnoisseurLoved when Benedict said this. As much as I love his Sherlock, it’s not the Holmes written by Doyle. It is, like Jeremy once said, a derivative. Jeremy Brett is the definitive Holmes and no one has ever come close to capturing the Holmes from the novels to the degree that he did, nor has any other show/film done such a faithful adaptation of the novels.
He would refuse a script that would go against Doyle’s description of the character. Brett did it so brilliantly, from Holmes’ mannerisms to his habits to the distinctive flip of the cane. He became consumed and obsessed with this role because he considered Holmes to be so much like him, and the character eventually took over him. Sadly, this along with his physical and personal tragedies proved to be a fatal combination. I simply cannot watch him in the last few episodes, it pains me to see this man so ill and fragile, someone who could barely stand and talk and would need an oxygen mask every few seconds. This visibly affected his performance, “but darlings, the show must go on”, he said.
Lets all remember this superb and extremely dedicated professional who gave everything he had in his ambition to be the best Sherlock Holmes ever. And you did it, Sir. May you Rest in Peace.
“Well…unbelievably, we’ve never seen Doyle before. Now, don’t ask me why that is, I don’t understand. All these years, no one has done his stories. They’ve done derivatives. They’ve taken the names of Holmes and Watson, but they’ve never done his stories. I *cannot* think why. At least that gave me something to do.” - Jeremy Brett
(the gifs are taken from here)Not gonna lie, I felt myself tear up a little and the largest grin spread across my face when he said that.
